One of the most important academic centers in Romania, Cluj-Napoca has 11 universities, of which 6 public and 5 private. With over 100.000 students living in the city, there are 219 students/1.000 resident population. The 51 faculties have over 300 majors in various teaching languages: Romanian, English, Hungarian, German and French.

An institution with tradition in Romania, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Iuliu Haţieganu” has its start in the Middle Ages and has been intensively developed at the end of the XIX-th century and the beginning of the XX-th century. The number of students has grown from 7000 in the year 2000, to 8500 in 2010. Due to a great measure to the rising number of foreign students, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj has become an international institution. The students have the possibility of studying in English and French.

The Technical University of Cluj-Napoca is the second in size, according to the number of students. Its main activity lies in educating and training engineers and technical staff. The university has 9 faculties in its structure with more than 12.000 students.
